How to Cure Lycanthropy in Skyrim (Step-by-Step)
Want to stop being a werewolf in Skyrim? Here is exactly how to cure lycanthropy through the Companions questline, including what you lose and whether it is worth it.
Becoming a werewolf during the Companions questline is exciting for about ten minutes — until you realize you can’t get the Rested sleep bonus and your followers keep commenting on it. If you’re ready to cure lycanthropy, here’s the exact process.
Before you start
You can only cure lycanthropy after you’ve progressed far enough in the Companions questline to reach the quest “Glory of the Dead.” If you became a werewolf but haven’t finished the main Companions story yet, keep going until that quest.
You’ll also need one Glenmoril Witch head. If you kept extra heads from the quest “Blood’s Honor,” you already have what you need. If you used them all, you’ll have to return to the Glenmoril Coven to collect another.
Step-by-step cure
- Make sure you have at least one Glenmoril Witch head in your inventory.
- Travel to Ysgramor’s Tomb (far north, near the top edge of the map).
- Progress to the flaming brazier known as the Tomb of Ysgramor.
- With a witch’s head in your inventory, activate the fire.
- Defeat the spectral wolf spirit that appears — this is your own beast blood made manifest.
- Once it’s dead, your lycanthropy is cured permanently.
What you lose
Curing lycanthropy isn’t free. You give up:
- The Beast Form power (transforming into a werewolf).
- The werewolf skill tree perks (if you invested any).
- The immunity to disease that werewolves enjoy.
What you gain
- The ability to get the Rested / Well Rested sleep bonus again (faster skill leveling).
- The ability to receive Standing Stone powers and other effects that werewolves are locked out of.
- No more follower complaints or hunter ambushes tied to your beast blood.
Can you become a werewolf again later?
Yes. If you cure yourself and change your mind, you can be re-infected by talking to Aela the Huntress after the Companions questline, provided the option is still available in your save. So the cure isn’t necessarily permanent for your character — just for this form.
Is it worth curing?
If you plan to build around the Standing Stones or want the Well Rested XP bonus for fast leveling, cure it. If you love the raw power of Beast Form for tough fights and don’t care about sleep bonuses, there’s no harm in staying a werewolf. It comes down to playstyle — but now you know exactly how to switch.
